Creative Mode

About a week ago we had the idea of making a cake for Minecraft, after some thought (and much procrastination playing a certain game) we foolhardily decided to recreate terrain from Minecraft in cake form. With some stone, some dirt and maybe even some coal this could look and taste great!

Experiments

The backbone of a good terrain is stone, but how do you make gray cake? Google was not helpful. We asked a friend of ours who'd studied making deserts for a year, and decided on using black food coloring on a light-colored cake. Now to figure out how much to use...

We worked off a recipe for white cake, though we had to substitute in vanilla sugar. A selection of food colourings and a battenburg tin were acquired.

Pre-baking colors
We decided to try 3, 5 and 7 drops of the food coloring to see which worked best. One batch of mixture filled the tin, with a small bit to spare.

Levelled with a knife
Looks like 7 drops is a winner...

Small mound

...but the blocks are very uneven. We'll need to do something about that.

How to do coal? One idea was to use chocolate sprinkles, another sugar crystals.

Looks like the sprinkles might work, and that 9 drops of coloring isn't an improvement over 7. You can also see the cocoa for the dirt, about 20 grams per batch works well. In the back is a failed attempt at grass using coconut and green food coloring.

The Big Day

Emboldened by the attempts of the day before, we prepared a ridiculous amount of cake mixture.

Sugar and butter
Flour and 6 eggs

Add milk and mix

Now split into three batches: stone/coal, dirt and sand.

A plan was assembled in Minecraft, then on paper, then in the Real World. We tried to do groups of two or three blocks together to help keep things even, slicing them later to distinguish the blocks. Green icing was used for the grass.

At this point one of us started a new game and the spawn point was a batcave, so we digressed on SMP for some time.

Plans in hand, the terrain wasn't too hard to put together. We made a video, but we can't get it uploaded so we'll put it up later. So here's the finished cake:

Hi little guy!

He's a big one!

I think he wants to be friends

Cleanup in aisle 3
Yes, it is delicious.

This was our first attempt at making a Minecraft cake, and we're sure that you think you can do better. Try it out, and share your creations in the comments!
